The 17th Annual “Shaping the Future” Award Winner Selected for 2013

Date posted: 12th June 2013

REMET PIC, Inc. and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) teamed up again to conduct the annual REMET ƒ€œShaping the Futureƒ€ Award. This yearƒ€™s panel review and winner selection was held, in Chicago, on November 29, 2012.

The 2013 winner is Eoin Cullen, a 2013 BFA candidate at the School of the Art Institute. Eoinƒ€™s untitled entry was selected, from a strong group of entries, by the panel of art and foundry experts. His sculpture, which will be cast in bronze, is intended to represent the timeline that most women go through during the process of giving birth. The final piece will show the female figure in an abstract way, without pushing the abstraction to the point of completely diluting the form. A series of rings, four on each side and one in the center, are meant to represent the nine months of a typical pregnancy, with the center ring additionally symbolizing the umbilical cord, as the lifeline between mother and child.

Upon receiving the 2013 Shaping the Future Award, Eoin intends to submit an additional proposal seeking to display the finished sculpture at the Prentice Womenƒ€™s Hospital at Northwestern Memorial Hospital Chicago.

Eoinƒ€™s proposal was selected because it exceeded the judgesƒ€™ expectations in each of the project criterion: professionalism, realistic timeline and budget and most importantly, a truly unique and challenging artistic impression.

The panel of judges for this yearƒ€™s diverse competition included Karly Spell (Art Casting of Illinois), Mary Seyfarth (Instructor and Artisan), Beth Sahagian-Allsopp (Vanguard Sculpture Service) and Randy Morss (REMET).

As always, REMET would like to thank the panel members for their dedication, insight and time spent making this award a special event. REMET would also like to express their gratitude to Carolyn Ottmers, Dan Matheson and the staff of SAIC for being gracious hosts to the panel members, and more importantly, for being key role models and mentors to the students who participated in this yearƒ€™s, and previous yearƒ€™s, contests.

The REMET ƒ€œShaping the Future Awardƒ€ was established to provide an aspiring SAIC student artist the funds and support necessary to complete a cast metal work of art, using the investment casting process. REMET has proudly presented this award, in conjunction with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, since 1997. Many of the previous award recipients have gone on to careers in the art world. In addition to being successful artists, past winners are found in other segments of the industry, including education and art foundry operation. REMET is happy to remain in contact with many of the previous winners.
